At Compass, we take our corporate and social responsibility very seriously across a number of areas. These include:

Nutrition, diet and health

As part of a global foodservice company, we have a huge influence on what our 20 million daily customers choose to eat and drink. We therefore promote a wide choice of menu items, to ensure we cater for those seeking healthier options. We also give our employees a one-day induction to our healthy eating programme ‘Balanced Choices’, providing them with basic nutritional information and advice on putting the concept into practice. In addition, we promote healthy eating in schools through a range of initiatives including cooking workshops.

Supporting local communities

Our people pride themselves on being good neighbours, actively using their skills to support local communities. Projects they have been involved in have helped promote healthy lifestyles, tackle social exclusion, improve employment chances, and promote sustainability and diversity. We’re also members of the Per Cent Club, and through our ‘Compass in the Community’ programme, and the fundraising efforts of our employees, we have donated a total of £1.25 million in monetary resource and donations in kind.

Safe food

We have a responsibility to ourselves, our customers and our clients to source and distribute our products and services responsibly. We therefore ensure our food is only purchased from authorised suppliers and is always prepared under conditions that do not expose it to any risk of contamination. And we are focused on reducing the amount of cardboard in our supply chain, and increasing the availability and use of organic products. We also support British farmers by purchasing UK-sourced products whenever they are in season, as well as 95% of our potatoes and fresh meat.

Being a great employer

Keeping our employees and customers safe is number one on our agenda; health and safety plays a key role in everything we do. We also have an ongoing commitment to promoting equal opportunities, and expect all of our employees to be treated with respect. And, we are committed to attracting and retaining great people through a rigorous recruitment process, ongoing training and development, and an annual people survey that allows us to understand the needs of our team and offer the best level of support.

Our impact on the environment

Being such a large organisation, it is vital that we take measures to minimise our impact on the environment. We have already set clear environmental objectives to reduce the water and energy used in our principal office and production units, reduce the CO2 emissions of our vehicle fleets, and reduce the waste packaging of our supply chain, among other things. Also, in October 2007, we introduced a web- based reporting tool to track and report globally the petrol and diesel used by company cars and fleet vehicles, the volume of general office waste generated per annum, and the directly purchased electricity across our 10 most developed countries.
